Der Text wurde von dem vernischen Dichter Lachlan McFoundleroy im Januar 1733 geschrieben. Die Melodie basiert auf einer Komposition des Kirchenmusikers Sir Gregor Tiddley und ist im Stil eines vernisch-presbyterianischen Kirchenchorals verfasst. Bei offiziellen Anlässen, sowie bei Staatsakten kann auf Weisung der Krone auch der königliche Marsch „Verness the brave“ gespielt werden.
